How to play blackjack

Blackjack is a popular card game heavily featured at both online and land-based casinos.  It has simple to follow rules, and the game can be played at a fast pace.  Unlike some other casino games, blackjack relies on a certain element of skill, making it an interesting and exciting game to play.

History

Like many card games there is a great deal of debate over the origins of blackjack.  It is commonly thought to have appeared in French casinos in the 18th century, where it was known as Vingt-et-Un.  It has also been argued that it was derived from similar games invented by the Romans or the Spanish.  The game was popularised in North America by French colonists and has evolved into the game of blackjack played today.

Premise of the Game

The aim of blackjack is to hold cards with a total value as close to 21 as possible without going over 21.  If the first two cards dealt to a player total 21, this is known as a blackjack and the player wins a 3 to 2 payout.  Any total over 21 means the player is ‘bust’, and loses the hand.  Each player in a blackjack game is pitted against the dealer, and a player with a total of closer to 21 than the dealer will win the hand.

Rules

Each player is dealt two cards.  The dealer has one card face down and one face up.  Each player decides if they want to stand, hit, split or double down, depending on the cards they are holding.  ‘Standing’ means stopping at your current total, ‘hitting’ means another card will be dealt, and ‘splitting’ occurs if a player has two cards of the same value and wishes to split them into different hands.  “Doubling down” means that the player doubles their initial stake after the first two cards are dealt, but can only take one more card.  In blackjack all cards are valued at their face value with the exception of kings, queens and jacks which all have a value of ten, and aces which can be valued as either one or eleven.

Tips and Strategies

While playing blackjack it is very important to pay attention to the dealer’s visible card.  If the dealer has a weak card showing, for example a 4, 5 or a 6, then you do not need to play aggressively.  In this situation the dealer has the highest chance of going bust, so it is worth standing on a lower total.  Dealers are required to hit on any total below 17, so you can take advantage of any weak cards they may have.
